Every so often, you stay in the sort of place that has you planning your return before you have even left. The Keep on Wellington’s south coast is one of those places for Zak and I as it makes for the perfect seaside staycation in Wellington.
We first visited all the way back in 2011 and returned more recently to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. And we’re still keen for more!
Being in Wellington’s coastal suburbs, you’ll need a car or to take public transport if you want to explore the city. However, I would not say the location is a hindrance so much as a chance to experience the wonderful south coast that a visitor might not otherwise get.
We chose The Keep over its sister property The Lighthouse (which we would still like to stay in someday) as we absolutely loved the rustic wood used throughout the building and how cosy it made the place look and feel. The property has three levels and the top floor has a roof hatch leading to a lovely rooftop area; the perfect spot for an at home picnic in fine weather.
The bottom level is charming, with a cute table and chairs set up in front of the large window where we enjoyed eating our meals with the brilliant sea views right in front of us.
The kitchen is well stocked with a selection of items you can use to cook your breakfast and the owner will cater to dietary requirements if you let him know in advance.
One of the highlights of both our stays has been flipping through the two large guest books. There were so many wonderful and often romantic, funny or, in the case of those who reported viewing dolphins from the window, jealousy inducing tales from previous guests who had loved their stay. Of course, we left our own fond notes in the books too.
The top level features the bedroom and a small bathroom, although the spa bath is located in the main bedroom area. Chocolates were left littered around it, and these were devoured quickly. The owner will also leave a bottle of bubbly when you stay two nights. Perfect for enjoying while soaking in a bubble bath.
There is no tv and in such a romantic hideaway, you shouldn’t miss one! This is the sort of place you come to get away from such things.
Since our last stay, I have been looking into other accommodation options in Wellington and while I have found many that are more expensive and ‘luxurious,’ I have yet to find any that have appealed to me as much as a stay at The Keep. I can see it being our go-to place for a staycation in Wellington for a long time yet.
